FERNS
and ALLIES from OPEN AREAS
(meadows, screes, lapiaz) |
Even if forests are everywhere below 1500 m, many valleys offer open sunny places where light-demanding species can develop. Beyond 1800 m, even the forest of mugo pines clears up and leaves gradually place to the alpine meadow strewn with slopes of screes, with vast surfaces of lapiaz, refuge for a coloured flora. Some ferns can find there the chilliness and humidity which are necessary for their development. |
