WETLAND
FERNS and ALLIES
|
Hikers know it well, in the Vercors, water is rare : because of the karstic nature of this area, water disappears very quickly in the ground forming underground rivers which reappear at the foot of cliffs (Bournillon, Choranche, Gournier, etc...) or, more modestly, by feeding many small springs and seepages. Nevertheless, some rivers exist, cascading in deep gorges (Bourne, Goulets, Combe-Laval, Lyonne, etc...) or curving quietly in more open valleys (Vernaison, Méaudret, Val de Lans, etc...), both aspects possibly succeeding along the same river. Elsewhere, geology locally allows the occurence of ponds, marshes and wet meadows. These habitats are searched for by species accepting or requiring atmospheric humidity, or even by species which are typical of water saturated soils. |
